Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (ロート製薬株式会社 Rōto Seiyaku Kabushiki-gaisha) is a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Tatsumi-nishi, Ikuno-ku, Osaka, Japan. Yasutami Yamada (山田 安民) founded "Shintendo, Yasutami Yamada Pharmaceutical Company (信天堂山田安民薬房)", the predesessor of Rohto, in Shimizucho, Higashi-ku (present: Shinsaibashi, Chuo-ku), Osaka on February 22, 1899.
Yamada sold "Rohto Eyedrops" in 1909. "Rohto" was named after August von Rothmund, a German ophthalmologist, who was a professor of Toyotaro Inoue (井上 豊太郎), a Japanese ophthalmologist.
Rohto is also the owner of American-based company Mentholatum, the makers of Softlips lip-care products and WellPatch heat rub products.
Media
Rohto is the first-half sponsor of "SMAP×SMAP" (produced by Kansai TV and Fuji TV). The opening movie can be seen when "SMAP×SMAP" starts.
